Giving a lecture at the Faculty of Arts / Department of English Language
As part of the cultural program adopted by the English Department at the College of Arts, Ashur University, the Head of the English Department, Assistant Professor Lamia Abdul Hamid Al-Ani, gave a lecture entitled
The Role of Academic Emotions in Iraqi College Students’ Performance in English Major”
The lecture dealt with the topic of academic emotions among university students majoring in English and their relationship to their performance. Professor Al-Ani relied on the theory of positive psychology
which emphasizes the importance of students’ academic emotions while attending major classes or their feelings before exams because they have a positive or negative impact on their performance. Studies have shown that the stronger the student’s motivation to learn, the more positive feelings he will have and thus better performance, while in the case of a lack of motivation, the student ends up with negative feelings that may also negatively affect his performance. Therefore, the researcher advises specialists in teaching English to take into consideration students’ feelings while attending major classes or exams because they affect, in one way or another, not only their performance but also their health condition Intellectual, mental, and even psychological and social. It is worth mentioning that the lecture was attended by the University President, Dr. Kazem Al-Majidi, Dean of the College of Arts and Dean of the College of Fine Arts, in addition to a number of department heads, professors, and students.
