A Scientific Workshop for the Department of Cybersecurity Engineering
Under the patronage of the University President (Professor Dr. Kadhum Abboud Al-Majidi) and the supervision of the Head of the Cybersecurity Engineering Department and Secretary of the University Council (Prof. Dr. Talib Muhammad Jawad Abbas), the Department of Cybersecurity Engineering at the College of Engineering at the University of Ashur conducted a scientific workshop entitled "Types of Attacks on Databases and Protection Methods" on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. The workshop was prepared and presented by lecturer (Assistant Professor Mahdi Abdul Sahib Hamid) and featured a select group of first- and second-year students from the department. The workshop was attended by the Dean of the College of Engineering (Prof. Dr. Ali Hussein Ateiwi), heads of departments specializing in cybersecurity, a number of faculty members and students from various colleges at the university, and guests from outside the university. Mr. (M.M. Mahdi Abdul Sahib), lecturer and rapporteur of the Cybersecurity Engineering Department, explained that the workshop aimed to present the department's future directions and visions in the field of cybersecurity, as well as highlight the importance of databases and some key points in their use, and present effective proposals and solutions for their protection.
The workshop included three main topics: the first, on SQL Injection, presented by student Ahmed Tariq. The second, on Brute Force, was presented by student Mays Fadel. The third, on Ransomware, was presented by student Youssef Akram.
The workshop concluded with important recommendations, including an emphasis on teamwork and establishing the correct foundations for database protection. The university, through the Cybersecurity Engineering Department, seeks to establish technical partnerships with governmental and security agencies to engage the department's students, as part of their summer training program, in practical training at these institutions. This will enhance their practical experience and align it with their academic background. A number of outstanding students from the university/cybersecurity departments will also participate in a workshop on the sidelines of the exhibition, which will be held early next week at the Baghdad International Fairgrounds, within the cybersecurity theme. The department is also organizing an exhibition that will showcase the academic achievements of a number of students, inspired by the courses they have taught.
